A History of European Blackjack

Blackjack is currently the most popular card game played in the world. A mix of skill and luck, Blackjack can be played by both beginners and experts alike. 

Blackjack is derived from a game called “twenty one”. While the origins of “twenty one” are unknown, there are written references dating back to the early 1600’s in Spain and France. The object was to reach 21 without going over, with Aces being either 1 or 11. The main difference between “twenty one” and the modern Blackjack is the use of the 10 card in modern Blackjack.

“Twenty one” made its way to the United States, but it did not gather a popular following early on. In order to produce more interest in the game, casinos offered bonuses if the hand was made up of the ace of spades and a black Jack. Playing blackjack in online casino sites has few different rules to remember. The game caught on and rose in popularity. Soon after, the bonus was eliminated and what was left was the modern game of blackjack.
